WhatsApp video message guide — 2026.

By Jerish Jacob, Co-founder · Published Oct 05, 2026 · 10 min read

WhatsApp has three ways to send video: Instant Video Messages (short clips recorded inside the chat), pre-recorded video files, and video calls. Each has its own rules, size limits and best uses. This guide covers all three on iPhone and Android, plus how Indian D2C brands use them to close sales inside WhatsApp without a website.

The three types of WhatsApp video

How to send a WhatsApp Instant Video Message

Instant Video Messages (IVM) launched globally in mid-2023 and are now available on every version of WhatsApp. The icon is next to the microphone in the chat input bar.

On iPhone and Android:

  1. Open the chat with the person you want to send the video to.
  2. In the message bar, you will see a microphone icon on the right. Tap it once to toggle between voice and video mode — the icon changes to a camcorder.
  3. Tap and hold the camcorder icon to start recording. The timer counts up to 60 seconds.
  4. Slide your finger up to lock the recording — you can now let go of the screen while it keeps recording.
  5. Tap the stop button when done, or let the 60-second timer run out.
  6. Lift finger to send instantly (if not locked), or tap the send arrow if locked.

IVMs auto-play with sound off in the chat. The recipient taps to unmute, same as Instagram Reels. The video is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be forwarded unless you re-send it as a file.

How to send a pre-recorded video

For longer or higher-quality videos — a product unboxing, a worn-on-model clip, a storefront walkthrough — send a pre-recorded file.

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the attachment icon (paperclip on Android, + on iPhone).
  3. Choose Gallery or Photo & Video Library.
  4. Pick the video. Trim it with the slider at the top if needed (long videos get an automatic trim prompt).
  5. Tap send. On good 4G, a 20-second video uploads in 3–5 seconds.

How to start a WhatsApp video call

Video calls are the right tool for live product consultations, high-ticket sale confirmations, and remote fittings.

  1. Open the chat with the person.
  2. Tap the camcorder icon in the top right of the chat.
  3. The call rings. If accepted, both see each other.
  4. To add participants (up to 32 total), tap the add-person icon mid-call.

Why can't I send a video on WhatsApp? Common fixes

Six reasons a WhatsApp video fails to send:

  1. File too big. Over 2 GB. Trim or compress. On iPhone, use the built-in Photos trim. On Android, apps like InShot work.
  2. Poor network. Try again on better signal or Wi-Fi. Uploads retry automatically for 24 hours.
  3. Outdated WhatsApp version. Update to the latest version via Play Store or App Store.
  4. Unsupported format. Convert to MP4 using a free tool like HandBrake or an app on your phone.
  5. Recipient blocked you. The video shows as sent (one tick) but never delivers (second tick never appears). You cannot force delivery.
  6. Storage full. Both sender and recipient need free space. Clear WhatsApp cache if yours is low.

How Indian D2C brands actually use WhatsApp video

The use cases that move orders, learned from the Founding 100 brands running on Behaf:

1. Fit demos for fashion. A buyer asks "will this fit a 42 chest." Instead of typing size charts, the seller sends a 15-second IVM showing the shirt worn on a 42-chest model. Shipped-order rate on sized items climbs 15–25 percentage points.

2. Fabric drape for sarees and shawls. Pashmina, linen, cotton silk — all look different from a flat lay to a worn shot. A 20-second video of the saree pallu moving in real light answers the "is this real" question better than a thousand words of brand copy.

3. Jewellery close-ups. Hallmark detail, enamel finish, chain gauge. Video shows what a photo cannot. For a ₹15,000+ piece, the buyer effectively does their verification before paying.

4. Wellness product texture and application. Face cream consistency, serum absorption rate, hair oil pour. The buyer sees what the product actually behaves like.

5. Live packing videos as proof-of-care. Short clip of the item being wrapped and sealed. Builds trust with first-time buyers who are nervous about COD authenticity.

6. Festival greeting + product tease. A Dussehra or Diwali IVM with the shipment confirmation. Low effort, high repeat-buyer loyalty.

7. High-ticket video call close. For orders above ₹20,000 (bridal pieces, premium shawls, big gifting), a 5-minute video call before payment resolves 70% of the "but is it real" hesitations.

Automating product videos inside the chat

On a vanilla WhatsApp setup, every video request is a seller typing and recording. At 20 chats a day, that is an hour of your afternoon. Platforms that connect your product catalogue to WhatsApp — like Behaf — can automatically send the right video from your catalogue when the buyer asks about a specific SKU.

How it works in Behaf: each product has a short video attached in the dashboard (worn-on-model for fashion, close-up for jewellery, texture for wellness). When a buyer asks "can I see this in olive" or "does it fit a 42 chest," the AI sales agent sends the matching video within the chat, in the brand's voice, without seller involvement. The buyer gets the answer in seconds; the seller stays off the phone.
