How to use a WhatsApp link for your Indian D2C brand
A wa.me link is the fastest way to turn Instagram, Meta ads, email, and QR codes into real WhatsApp conversations. The link opens a chat with your number pre-filled with a message the buyer can edit before sending. One-tap on mobile, one-click on desktop.
The common uses that actually move orders:
- Instagram bio. Paste the wa.me link into your bio URL field. Buyers who tap it land in your WhatsApp instead of a website that drops 40 to 60 percent of them at the next step.
- Instagram story stickers. Use the Link sticker, paste the wa.me URL, tap sticker in story. Buyers who tap go straight to WhatsApp.
- Meta Click-to-WhatsApp ads. Not strictly a wa.me link (ads use a different format), but the pre-filled message pattern is the same — pre-write the first thing the buyer says so your reply has context.
- Email signature. "Reply here or WhatsApp us: wa.me/..." — higher reply rate than any email thread.
- QR code on packaging. Print the QR on the invoice slip. Returning buyers tap, re-order within a chat they already have context in.
- Pin to Twitter bio, LinkedIn headline, YouTube channel description. Any surface that allows a link.
What a great pre-filled message looks like
The pre-filled message is the first thing the buyer sends when they tap your link. A good one does two jobs: tells you what they came for, and starts the conversation politely.
- For fashion / jewellery brands: "Hi, I saw your [brand name] collection and want to know more"
- For wellness / skincare: "Hi, I'd like to buy a product — can you help me pick?"
- For gifting: "Hi, I'd like to send a gift. Can you help?"
- For food / spices: "Hi, I'd like to order from your [brand name] shop"
- For CTWA ad campaigns: Add the campaign name — "Hi, saw your Diwali ad, want to order". Lets you attribute without a UTM parser.
Keep it short. One line. In the buyer's language if your audience leans Hindi or Marathi.
Click tracking on a wa.me link
wa.me by itself does not expose click data. Three workarounds, from simplest to most robust:
- Encode a campaign tag in the message. Example:
?text=Hi%20%5Bdiwali-reel-oct5%5D. When the buyer sends, you see "[diwali-reel-oct5]" in your first inbox message. Free. Zero infra. - Wrap in a Bitly, Rebrandly or Dub short link. You get click counts, geography, device. Still free at the volume most Indian D2C brands run.
- Use Behaf's attribution. If buyers land in a Behaf storefront, every chat is tagged with the Instagram, ad or source URL automatically in your dashboard. See the Instagram-to-WhatsApp funnel playbook.
What this tool does not do
Honest limits.
- It does not reply for you. A wa.me link opens the chat; a human (or an AI sales agent like Behaf's) still has to reply.
- It does not send automated messages. For that you need the WhatsApp Business API or a platform built on top of it.
- It does not verify the number is on WhatsApp. If the number is not registered with WhatsApp, the link opens WhatsApp but says the number is not valid.
- It does not bypass Meta's rules. If you broadcast the link in spam ways, buyers can report your number and WhatsApp can throttle or ban it.
From a link to a storefront
A wa.me link is step one. It gets the buyer into a chat. What happens next decides whether the chat ends in a shipped order or a scroll-back the seller forgets by Thursday.
If you are a solo founder on Instagram shipping 20 to 2,000 orders a month, every chat currently depends on you being awake and typing. Behaf replaces that with a WhatsApp storefront (product pages, cart, checkout, UPI, COD, Shiprocket pickup) and an AI sales agent that handles the full chat-to-shipped-order flow without a human in the loop. The wa.me link above still works — it is just that the thing on the other end finally pulls its weight.
